Redland Real Estate

Redland lies an hour south of Miami in the southern tip of Miami-Dade County. The community is named for the color of its local soil. It's a peaceful rural neighborhood of acre and half-acre properties, farms and citrus groves "The Redlands" as it is called by locals' features lush tree-lined streets and parks. The Redlands is highly sought-after for its country-ambiance, big-city proximity. South Miami's attractions have a distinct character - fun, fascinating and unique. The Redlands borders the largest subtropical preserve in North America, the Everglades.

It is located about 20 miles southwest of the downtown Miami area, and just north of the Florida Keys which makes it close enough to have all the amenities of a large metropolitan area and far enough away to retain the small town values that make it a desirable place to live. Readily accessible by the Florida Turnpike and US-1 it is a rustic community offering a varying range of income levels, business opportunities and nearby recreational amenities.

The area south of Miami was opened to homesteaders in 1898. The Redlands' major source of revenue at that time was agriculture, with the harvest of winter vegetables and tropical fruits being shipped all across the country. Due to its strategic location, the Redland area prospered with the Florida real estate boom in the early 1920s. In 1926, a major hurricane unleashed its fury, destroying Flagler's overseas railway. Almost 50 years later, in 1992, Hurricane Andrew blew through south Miami-Dade County leaving a wave of destruction in its path. True to the pioneer spirit that created the area, the people of the South Miami communities picked up and rebuilt and restored. The community has focused on preserving and renovating historic buildings, establishing new businesses and creating a historic district replete with charming specialty shops and restaurants.

The Redlands is right in the middle of it all. Close to the finest nightlife restaurants and boutiques. The Miami International Airport is just 30 minutes away. The Redland also offers proximity to a host of recreational activities including: Metrozoo, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, Parrot Jungle and Gardens, the Miami Museum of science and Planetarium and the brand New Miami Children's Museum. With the sprawling expanse of the Everglades to the west, the pristine Biscayne National Park to the east, the glitz and glamour of Miami to the north and the Florida Keys to the south, The Redland offers something for everyone.
