Leisure City Real Estate

Leisure City is located in Miami-Dade County, just outside of Homestead. It's comprised of a small, one-half of a square mile strip on the east side of US 1, west of the Florida Turnpike between SW 152 Avenue, SW 296 Street, and US 1. The City maintains a unique "small-town" atmosphere with all the urban amenities. Leisure City is a small area in the southern part of the County. The median resident age is 26.9 years and the median household income is $29,091.

The community was named by the developers, in hopes of attracting retired people. The area south of Miami was opened to homesteaders in the late 1800's. A path known as the Homesteader's Trail was the only route in and out until railroad and oil magnate Henry Flagler extended his railway south to the area. Later, Flagler extended his railroad from the Leisure City area (Homestead) to Key West and the Overseas Railroad was completed in 1912.Leisure City's major source of revenue at that time was agriculture, with the harvest of winter vegetables and tropical fruits being shipped all across the country. Due to its strategic location, the Leisure City area prospered with the Florida real estate boom in the early 1920s. In 1926 Mother Nature unleashed her fury with a major hurricane, destroying Flagler's overseas railway. In 1945 another severe hurricane struck and demolished the World War II airfield at what is now Homestead Air Reserve Base.

Almost 50 years later, in 1992, Hurricane Andrew blew through south Miami-Dade County leaving a wave of destruction in its path. True to the pioneer spirit that created the area, the people of South Miami-Dade picked up and rebuilt and restored. The community has focused on revitalizing its neighborhoods, preserving and renovating historic buildings, establishing new businesses. The antique shops along Krome Avenue form a charming district, one that is part of a designated Main Street Community of the Florida Bureau of Historic Preservation.

Leisure City's population is increasing and its ethnic composition becomes more diverse. The revitalized business district, neighborhoods and surrounding attractions make the Leisure City a convinent place to call home.

Leisure City is right in the middle of it all. Close to the finest nightlife restaurants and boutiques. The Miami International Airport is just 30 minutes away. Leisure City also offers proximity to a host of recreational activities including: Metrozoo, Vizcaya Museum and Gardens, Parrot Jungle and Gardens, the Miami Museum of science and Planetarium and the brand New Miami Children's Museum. With the sprawling expanse of the Everglades to the west, the pristine Biscayne National Park to the east, the glitz and glamour of Miami to the north and the Florida Keys to the south, Leisure City offers something for everyone.
